Operation: 'Honors at Arlington' diary

                           May 20 - 29, 2009

You would think a day off would be relaxing..

And NOT so emotional...
Well we must have walked
5 miles today.
Wow, what a
great place to see.

We started at the Iwo Jima memorial
(it’s within walking distance of our
motel)

 then went to the mall.

The Vietnam Memorial was so moving,

I knew it would be but going to it with
those that fought there,

and lost Brothers, Dads, Uncles etc...

Was almost more than I could take.

We also had a box of things that
people had sent for us to place at
the wall.

Flags, pictures, carnations that was
very hard to do but also made it
even more memorable.

The kids helped with this
 and took it very seriously.

The above 'extra' children are from a local school
field trip..

We also went to the WWII, WWI
and Korean War memorials and of

 course the Lincoln memorial and
Washington Monument.

above 2: WWII Memorial

That was all we could
get in the one day.

Indian Dave had the kids remember
those lost in the Korean war and
throw pennies into the pool....

then I saw the sign

When we were at the
Washington Monument
Marine One Flew over
and landed at the

Message from Bud:

Beckley W VA to Arlington VA
Terri & I,Dave,Wally, Mark we were running ahead of the main group to setup for the entrance to the hotel.
So unfortunately I don't have pics of the main escort coming in on I66. the police blocked all lanes of the freeway and from what everyone said it was a sight to behold, it really brought tears to the eyes.
After we got to the hotel kissed the ground and gave the hotel a big hug and we had congratulations all around.
YEAH FOR US!!!!!!
~Bud Thieme

I’ve selected a few photos from the album for your viewing enjoyment!  Love the Buffalo Soldier trailer!!  We have Bud kissing the ground, Bud’s delightful wife Terri, our heroes on their “hearse” and I forget what all else I chose!!!  I thank God everyone in the escort arrived safely.  Hard to believe tomorrow our heroes will finally get the burial they deserve.

"An 'artist beyond the call', he (Jim Mark) works an
EVENT the way General Patton worked his
magic on the heroic American soldiers of an era
long gone but not forgotten... not so much as 'Blood
and Guts' as: 'It's Now or Never to Participate in
your Life and show the World to Come - We Did
It with a Smile'. No, Artist Jim Mark is more like
Salvador Dali than any notable artist of the last
300 years" - John Knott, former CIA Officer,
